I have recently discovered a fantastic game called “MineCraft” by Markus Persson (Notch).
My aim is to provide a “come-to” page for all resources to do with the game (Similar to my Dwarf Fortress page.)
I will be including tutorials, utilities and links to forums and other various resources.
Basically, MineCraft is a survival game where you are dropped into a unique, randomly generated world (roughly eight times the surface area of the Earth) with absolutely nothing apart from your hands and the shirt on your back.
..and you have to survive (and herein lies the challenge… ).
During the day, it is sunny and pleasant and you can see for miles, sheep and cows and chickens run around happily across the green meadows and hills…
Then it gets dark….
I’m sure you can imagine the kind of creatures that come out at night (and if you can’t, load up the game and see for yourself, I won’t spoil it for you).
You will need to harvest resources like wood, coal and stone from the world and forge them into tools, weapons, armour and defensive fortifications.
Preferably before nightfall..
The graphic style of the game is fairly simple but it really works well and I have no idea how the world generation doesn’t bring my computer to a grinding halt with the sheer depth and breadth of the world, but it works fantastically.
Everything in the game is created from blocks; the trees, landscape and even the animals. As you ‘harvest’ the world, these blocks are removed from their location and placed in your inventory for you to use as you wish.
You can use these blocks to create workshops, forges, tools, weapons and just about everything else you can imagine.
Want to create a huge fortress? done.
Want to create a megaproject, like a life-size replica of the Starship Enterprise? done.
Want to recreate Moria and create a huge mine connected by mine carts you can zip around on? done and done.
You can preview and play a free online version at Minecraft.net to see if it is for you. If you like it you can purchase the full version for €9.95 (Approx £8.70 / $13.76) which unlocks the options, allows you to save your world and gives you free updates for life.
There is now an alpha multiplayer version that allows players to join together to construct even bigger megastructures and flood each others forts!.
The majority of the tutorials I link to will be done by “Paulsoaresjr” whom I have found to be informative and funny! check out the videos below to get a real headstart on Minecraft:
